Croatia toll roads
 

I have a silly question. As I live in the U.S. and see a lot of places to stay as you drive along toll roads or the Interstate highway, does this exist to some degree in Croatia?

I'm not sure I can answer, but I'll tell you what I can and give your post a bump in the process. :-)

I haven't driven in Croatia since 2009, but I don't remember hotels or motels right at the interstates or their interchanges. But there are few places in Croatia where you would travel enormous distances without coming near a city or town where you would probably be able to get a room.

My toll road experience is in Istria, from Plitvice to Split, and from Split to Dubrovnik and I am with kja, there aren't the same kind of roadside motels like we have in the states. There are some gas stations with restaurants and shops similar to the Autogrills in Italy, but for the life of me I can't remember ever seeing a hotel at one of them.

You'll see some beautiful scenery though :)

Thanks for your replies. I am thinking it could be like driving in Czech or Germany, get off a 'toll' road into a small town and perhaps find a Zimmer or sobe. I hope Croatia doesn't change into having all that 'highway clutter'.

Last month (June '15) I drove from Italy to Plitvice Lakes, to Dubrovnik, then back north to Korcula, ferry to Split, drove Split to Zadar, Zadar to Rovinj and Rovinj back to Italy.

A decent amount of this drive was on Croatia's wonderful highway system. They have rest stops every xx number of kilometers and they range from pullouts with toilets, to coffee shops to full restaurants. At least one with a nice view over a valley had a sign for a hotel but it wasn't actually open. Looking for accommodations in towns is the best way to go.

Was this in Dalmatia? I saw a big hotel over a valley, all closed up and asked a guy I work with about it. He said someone built the hotel thinking it would be very popular, but then no one stayed there so he had to close it. So now it is just sitting there empty.
