Croatia questions
 

Hi,
I'm just starting my research to see if Croatia is even in the cards financially. I thought I heard that there was going to be more flights to Croatia but I'm not seeing any evidence of this. I've looked through quite a few threads but haven't seen too much about this. Also most of the info on this forum is a bit old so I'm looking for current info.
Am I right to assume that Dubrovnik would be the largest airport in Croatia? Would it be less costly to fly into Rome, Venice or Milan?
Lastly, I'm not seeing fairs for next fall but I am seeing a trend in higher prices as one gets closer to the summer. Approx when do the flights to Croatia and or Rome start to come back down again.
I'd likely be flying out of Boston but would go down to Newark or NY if it saves a bit or the flights are a bit better. Many of the flights that I'm seeing have horrendous layovers.

Last fall we flew from Newark via Frankfurt to Split on Luftansa which had the best schedules. Flew out of Dubrovnik en route home.

You might check out Zagreb airport. I had to fly from Dubrovnik to there to catch a flight to Frankfurt and then home.

The prices to and from Zagreb are huge. The flights there time wise seem very good but are extremely long for the return flights.
Will keep checking.

I'm thinking of flying in and out of Germany and talking a low cost round trip flight to Croatia next year to save a few bucks. I'll spend few days in Germany as well.

edit - Sorry, I meant earlier to say that the price 'savings' to Zagreb are huge.

I flew to Milan, took the train to Venice and a bus to Rovinj. I spent a week on the Istrian Peninsula then took a ferry to Dubrovnik. You can stop at islands along the way if you like. I was in Croatia for 2 weeks. Well worth the trip!

We flew to Zagreb on Air France through Paris, took a Croatia Air flight to Dubrovnik and, after a stay there, rented a car and worked our way back to Zagreb. As Grasshopper said, worth the hassle getting there!

Split has a big airport. Dubrovnik's is relatively small. Or you can arrive by boat: Venezia Lines for Venice to Istria or Jadrolinija sails from Ancona and Bari across to Dubrovnik or Split or Zadar.

Aer Lingus serve both Boston and Dubrovnik, through Dublin Airport.

How 'bout flying out of Philly? Do you have any friends/relatives there that you could stay with before/after a flight?

We usually use Newark, but found cheaper flights to/from Philly to Croatia.

Philly didn't come in any less costly. Boston > NY > Budapest > Zagreb came in the lowest. The return layover in Budapest is a killer, though - 15+ hrs. This may be a good excuse to get out and check Budapest if it's easy enough to get around from the airport.
I wouldn't have thought to look at Budapest but the flight is only one hour from Zagreb.

Oh, too bad. Well, sounds like a spin around Budapest is in the cards, then!

Have you looked into flying into London and then taking one of those discount airlines, like easyjet or Ryan Air, to Croatia? It might mean having to travel across town from Heathrow or Gatwick to a smaller airport like Luton. Don't know how you feel about that.

Look at skyscanner.net. You can input "Boston" in the "From" box and then in the "to" box put in "Europe" to see how the fares come up for the different European cities.
