Croatia : Island or Mainland ???

We are visiting Croatia for a week this august. We have two days already booked in Dubrovnik and I am now wondering how to spend the remaining time.

We arrive at Dubrovnik by ferry from southern italy and fly back to england from Dubrovnik a week later.

Our tastes are simple and we like quiet places with easy access to nature and the sea, with some dining out and plenty of cultural visits.

Can people please advise me on whether to stay on the mainland and visit the islands or vice versa.

Suggestions of quiet understated places to stay would be most welcome.
We will have a car on rental....

many thanks in advance

In most months, the coast and islands are the place to be. However, in August they are quite crowded. Any place I could suggest I have visited in May, so I feel hesitant about what they would be like in August. Accommodation gets booked up in the historic towns (such as Korcula, Hvar, etc.). I assume the coastal places that lack the historic attractions also book up with vacationing families. Try researching the Peljesac peninsula as well as the Elafiti islands just off Dubrovnik. Also, if you choose an island, for example Korcula, you might try staying in a small town and not Korcula town.
inGood luck!

August is quite busy, but you can still find some quiet places on the islands. You might want to try Lumbarda on Korcula. It is a beautiful place with vineyards and beaches and is only about 10 minutes from Korcula town where you can go for sightseeing and dining.

The Elafiti islands are also likely to be more quiet, though your options for dining and cultural events will be limited.
