Have you tried Auto Europe? They are a broker and may have options to reserve a car with an automatic transmission, though in Europe you will probably pay a lot for that. You'll still wind up with Hertz, Budget, Sixt, etc. when you get to Croatia...

Just called my contact at holidayautos and they have Oryx Car Rental for a compact auto ($350 all in, including CDW, for a week). Hertz are also coming in on the economy, which holiday autos may be able to source

We used Unirent for an automatic in October 2010. I have no complaints

We're using Auto Europe in pretty much the same timeframe as you. We can drive a manual but have used AE many times in the past ---great customer service and I think if they say they can get you an automatic that is what you will get. Good luck
