Croatia 2 week itinerary

I am planning a trip for June in Croatia for two weeks, any advice on the following itinerary gratefully accepted:

Fly to Dubrovnik, spend 2 days there
Bus or ferry to Split, spend 2 days there
Ferry to Hvar or one of the other islands, spending 4-5 days
Bus/train(?) to Plitvice NP, spend 2 days there
Back to Split then fly home

I am also planning to propose to my girlfriend on this trip, any thoughts on particularly romantic places to do this??

Hopefully hear from some of you soon!

Thanks

To respond, it would help to know something of your interests - what kinds of things do you want to see and experience on this trip (other than hearing a resounding YES - good luck!)

Lake Plitvice is the most romantic place I can think of on this trip. Pick out a nice waterfall...

Oh, Sarge, I don't necessarily disagree, but the image that immediately came to mind was the hordes of Japanese tourists who mobbed the park when I was there, each making sure to get pictures of him/herself with various combinations of companions in front of each descending spray of water. No criticism intended -- I'm a tourist, too! But I'm imagining Chris trying to propose, as he and his intended are being photographed by all sorts of strangers and being pushed from side to side, trying to maintain their balance as tour groups press around and past them.... It could be wonderful, but I would think Chris would be wise to have a lot of patience and a back-up plan if he selects the Plitvice Lakes for this romantic moment!

it might be easier to fly out of Zagreb, not Split, so return to Zagreb for the flight home.

There are many romantic spots on Hvar Island - actually there are so many romantic spots in Croatia period that I would have no set plan but figure out the best time when you get there. The right moment will make itself known.

Thanks all for your replies. I have been looking up the ferries from Dubrovnik to Split and people have said it only runs two days a week on that route. Does anybody know if that is true - I cannot seem to make sense of the ferry companies' timetables!

Thanks again

That's probably true. There are more seasonal ferries running in June I think between the islands and the mainland but perhaps not between Dubrovnik and Split. I wouldn't get excited about taking a bus instead, though - the buses in Croatia are pretty decent.

However, I'm pretty sure there is daily catamaran service between Split and Hvar year round, if that helps. I took one from Korcula that stopped in Hvar on the way to Split and it seemed to be daily (this was October).

I think most people would take a night from Split and add it somewhere else, perhaps to Dubrovnik (you can do many excursions there especially in June e.g. a day trip to Mostar).

I agree that if you make it to Plitvice, flying out of Zagreb from there makes more sense if you can, as it's closer to Plitvice plus you should have more flight options out of there than out of Split.

There is no train service to Plitvice; there's a train from Split to Zagreb but doesn't stop near Plitvice. There is bus service but you need to be careful; there hare been reports of buses not always stopping. You may have to flag one down - different customs than in the US. Don't assume ever bus driving by will automatically stop when you think it will at a remote bus stop. I'd do some more checking on that before committing to the bus.

Plitvice is an amazing place. But for a proposal, I'd probably pick one of the amazing sunsets you're sure to see on the Dalmatian Coast.

I'm one of the people who would keep the time in dynamic, lively, intriguing Split, though I'd spend a few hours visiting Trogir during that time. (I'm sure Andrew knew that I'd say that! ;-) )

I would suggest you to stay one day more in Dubrovnik and take a day trip to Mljet. It is an island not far from Dubrovnik (maybe one or two hours trip), with a wonderful National Park - two lakes with cristal clear water, where you can bike, walk or swim. It is usually not crowded, once transportation is limited. Boats depart from Dubrovnik (Gruz) early in the morning, and you can return in the end of the afternoon. It worths the trip!
