Hi, We will be in Trieste in Sept. We were told to cross the border into Croatia. Where would you go on a day trip. We will have a car. Is it worth the time. Or should we spent the time in Italy? Also anything special to see in Trieste and Udine? Any reccomendations on hotels and resterants would be helpful. Thanks Myra

Hi!
MANY years ago we crossed into Jugoslavia and headed a short way down the coast to Bakar, right on the coast. It was quiet, cheap and relaxing. There was an old hotel there at the time. I have no idea what it is like today. If you go, let me know what you find.

Hi,
Croatia and Slovenia are both quite nice. Slobo...you must be joking??!!Both countries are very different from anything in Western Europe. The coast of Croatia is beautiful and people are friendly. Prices are cheap, but then accomodations are also not as high quality. I have been to Opatija and Rieka, both are OK. For a day trip, however, I would head inland to Llubljana, Slovenia. It is about 1 hour and similar to Prague in feeling, though smaller. They are in the midst of a huge renovation and the people are great. English is no problem, good restaurants and good shopping. We have an apartment there so I have the pleasure of visiting on a regular basis. Udina is also nice. I went there This winter. Obviously Italian (as opposed to Central European). I wouldn't go out of my way for it. The roads in Slovenia are great and the driving is much easier than Italy.
Have fun!

Myra: Definitely go to Croatia if you have the time. It is perfectly safe and has been for quite some time. Ignore Slobo, he’s obviously a troll. You can tell by his name, Slobo = Slobodan Milosevic!

Nina
Croatia has some beautiful, relatively untouched coastline, a day trip to Opatia or Rijeka (not sure of distance) would be worth the drive. Accommodains are a bit dated, but you can find some rennovated hotels/pansions. I'd considering opting for a trip to Ljubljana, Slovenia as well.
Slobo is way off in saying that it's a war zone...far from it. If you have time one day, you should travel all the way down the coast of Croatia and visit Dubrovnik...a real gem in the Balkans.
