Crete-Santorini-Athens
Hi! I need some advice PLEASE.
Me and my husband are flying from Germany to Chania,Crete on 1st September. We will have 6 days on the island and on the 6th of september we meet our friends in Santorini, where we are planning to spend 5 days and than we will take ferry to Athens, spend 2 days there and fly back to Chania and than to Germany. My question: does this plan sound reasonable? We never been in Greece. We are in late 20th. We dont like partying, but like nice vies, good food and interesting things to do/see(e.g. wine tours, cooking classes, dicing and all that). Can you please tell from your experience which part of this trip can we spend on the beach, relaxing? Is it next to chania or in Santorini? What are the must see things? I will appreciate any input. Thank you p.s. Also how much money suppose to be enough for a 14 days stay, I mean food, eating out to good/local places, sightseeing, hotel? thank you |
Chania's beaches are much better than Santorini's.
There is no way we can tell you how much money is enough because we don't know your hotel preferences, the food you enjoy, and the sort of activities you like. |
Brotherleelove2004, thank you so much for advice. I will take your advice and plan the beach time next to Chania.
I realized that my question about money wasn't vey specific. I am just so seeing how much eating out costs there( no in a fast food and not in a super fancy place), but something good quality local? Also, what are the iteresting things to do in Chania area, besides beach and walking around the town itself? Is 5 days too much for Santorini?thank you for all the input, it helps ALOT!;) |
Can you change your ticket to arrive in Chania and depart from Athens? It seems like a waste of time to go back to Chania to fly home. There are lovely beaches near Chania. I do not care for the beaches on Santorini, but the views are breathtaking and a boat trip around the cauldron is a great experience. It is very relaxing to sit on the cliffs entranced by the vista. I find the food to be quite reasonable in most of Greece except for the higher priced areas - there are lots of tavernas and they serve separate items that can usually be shared.

The food in Crete is wonderful. The beaches are great as are the small villages and antiquities. I
Also liked the beaches ion Santorini. 5 days on Santorini is a lot and it is expensive, but,the views are super. what ever you do you will have a fabulous, time. enjoy! |
yipper, thank you so much for the reply. DO you think it is better to cut santorini time to 4 days and add additional day to crete?thank you
|
parosblue, we are flying low cost from germany to chania and back. For one person it is around 90 euros roundtrip. I checked flights from Athens to Chania and for both they are 140$, which is much cheaper than going from Athens to Germany. That is the only reason we are going back.

Well, that those rates make a difference. If it were me, I would put that extra day on Crete. There is so much to see and do there, plus you will find it cheaper than Santorini. IMO, the beaches on Crete are much preferable to those in Santorini. Understandable, the latter has the fabulous vistas - not to be missed, but 4 days will work great and you could spend lots more time on Crete.

I would rather spend an extra day on Crete. I assume you are renting a car on Crete. you could look into renting an apartment or small house.
