Rethymno and Chania are both very similar, as they both have wonderful old venetian cities and harbours.
The old harbour of Chania is bigger but i do like the one of Rethymno as well.

It would be hard for me to choose between the two, as i like them both equally...
Rethymno has perhaps the advantage of being in the middle between Heraklion and Chania and only a 50 minutes drove from the South of Crete, which makes day trips easier.

I think it would be better to ask someone who already has been there during Christmas.

Clausar... Thank you for your response. I have read your posts before, and I have a high regard for your recommendations regarding the Greek Isles. It's good to see that my initial impressions are confirmed...but it brings me no closer to a decision. But a choice between 2 attractive options is a good problem to have!

My gut tells me that during "shoulder season," we will find more to hold our interest in the Old Town of Chania. Especially if we are returning each evening to a place like this:

Do you (or anyone else out there) know of a better place to stay than the one I've linked to? The TA reviews are ecstatic about it.

Chania is absolutely beautiful especially in the evenings with narrow, winding streets filled with friendly people generally laughing, eating, drinking and enjoying themselves.I absolutely recommend staying in the city so you can explore the area in the evenings if you enjoy that sort of thing.

Having said that, you can rent a car and drive to some of the beach areas such as Elafonissi. Also, you can take a cruise from Chania to Balos to experience that area.

Either way, ENJOY!!
