I've never been to Crete, but I've been to Mallorca many times and I have had a good time every time. Great beaches and lovely food. Can always guaranty me and my friends or family, whomever I go with, have a great time. Love the area we stay in.

I'm going to disagree with TravellingSeeker and say that in May, I'd rather go to Crete where the weather is likely to be better and you have the best chance of sea warm enough to swim in if that's what you'd like to do.

both islands are beautiful, though quite different. If you like looking at ancient greek sites, Crete may have the edge, but both have mountains, coves, lovely countryside, and interesting island cultures. And in May, both should have lovely spring flowers.

There is no comparison. We just returned from three weeks on Crete, by far the most interesting and diverse island in the Med. The cradle of western civilization during the Bronze Age, the Minoans left legacy that lives on today in something called Filoxenia.

This is a unique term to Crete and Greece that means literally "the love of visitors" - beside the beaches of Falasarna and Elafanisi (sp), Chania and the Palace at Knossos, the 150 mile long island has snowcapped mountains (til the end of May) and aquamarine seas galore.

I'm travel editor at Argo Travel, and a travel writer for The Epoch Times and many others. As some suggest, May is a great time of year on Crete.

After having sailed and travelled around 75% of the Mediterranean islands, Crete might just make my top 10.

Oh I see and when a travel writer is paid to visit Crete and then comes out with tosh like Crete is "by far the most diverse and interesting island in the Med" I can't point out what tosh is is ......mainly because you are Greek.

Clausar, one of the things I like about posts tagged for Greece is that most people who reply are generally helpful and polite to one another. Maybe that famous filoxenia is rubbing off on those of us who love Greece.

Unfortunately I am seeing more and more posts from people who seem to be there only to argue, and not just on this thread. I've always gone by the rule "If you wouldn't say it to their face don't say it online."

Just so there is no misunderstanding my last post, clausar has been unfailingly polite to everyone who writes on this forum.

Questions like: <i>"Which of the two islands would you recommend?"</i> are naturally going to invite opinion, and everyone is entitled to his/her own view. I agree with clausar that it is rude to call a comment silly.
