All the roads in Crete are scenic, some just more than others. And Spilli is worth a stop -- those 24 lion-mouths pouring down melted snow-wter from the top of mount Idy... wow! Tke a drive, have a picnic.

The imbros gorge road is not terrible, it's well cambered, well-paved, you just take it steady. THAT is not the consideration. ... it't the road getting OFF the south coast, upt from Plakias to Spili, as I clearly said, that is the driving challenge ... not very wide road. However, it's better goig north than it is going South. I've done it both ways.

Sorry, Travelerjan,
I read too quickly, and got the part about "switchbacks" and "mountain-driving" blurred in my mind.

Your "simpler scenario" makes more sense to me if we do include the west coast area. I also like the suggestion of stopping in Spili.
