Crete - Best place to stay away from the crowds

We are a family of four - Myself, my husband and two children aged 21 and 16. We are looking for a villa holiday in Crete, with a view , near to a beach and not too touristy. I have no idea which area is good for what we want! We are aiming to come 28thJune until 12th July - ish!

We like a bit of history, local culture and don't need clubs or anything like that - just some nice tavernas / restaurants for eating. We will hire a car so can get about.

Any suggestions will be most welcome!

Thank you

Avoid the places on both sides of Heraklion (Chersonisso, Malia, Sisi, etc.) and - as a general rule - all places where you find big hotels (most of them between Chania and Agios Nikolaos) and may be Agia Galini and you will be fine.

I like the South coast: Paleochora (and the small West coast places up to Kissamos), Sougia, Loutra, Plakias (windy, however), Ierapetra and the whole coast from there up to Palekastro and Sitia.

BTW: the first 2 weeks of July are not yet super high season

Georgippolis perhaps or in the hills, Douliana or Vamos?
These are all near Chania to The east. To the west side of Chania there are many beach resorts nearby.
