Crete accomodations
 

I need accomodations in Crete (below 100 euro) in June for 3 nights. Preferably the Chania area. It is a good idean to base in Chania for 3 nights and drive to Iraklion and Rethimnon and other sights? Thanks for any help

Chania is, IMO, the nicest of those towns, and I think it's a good base. The most interesting and "least spoiled" part of Crete is the western side.
We rented an apartment in a tiny village a bit east of Chania, so I don't have any hotel to recommend. But someone on here will! Have a wonderful time!

I have stayed in an apartment through www.smart-holidays.com - a small independent British company, who let apartments and hotels in Crete. They have a good choice across the Island, including Chania. I have stayed twice just north of Chania on the Akoruti Penninsular - breathtaking.

Freelance Holidays are the same. last time we were there we stayed in Erietta apartments which were lovely and terrifically located above the harbour; but one has to live with the bar noise til the small hours.

We rented through Pure Crete (www.purecrete.com); our apartment was in Megala Chorafia. Quickly scanning the site, I don't see our place, unless its appearance has changed; we were there in 1998. It was adequate in terms of amenities, but it's location on a high hill overlooking Souda Bay was super. Gorgeous view, easily accessible, great little taverna in the village.

I just got back from talking to a travel agent (who is also greek) and told me that the best idea is to base out of Heraklion and drive to the other towns and that there is not too much to see in Chania.
I'm confused. does anybody know of a good place (under 100 euro) in Heraklion? Thanks again

Well, there may not be "that much" to see in Chania, but I wonder what the ta thinks there is to see in Heraklion. At least Chania has some charm. I still stand by my suggestion to base in Chania or even Rethymnon.

Your travel agent has it wrong. Iraklion is a dive by comparison with any of the other 3 major cities in Crete.

I concede that it's hard to visit the far east from Chania, but, to my mind, if you go to Iraklion you'll spend all your time trying to get out.

Oh no... please don't stay in Heraklion... its awful IMO... Chania has lovely restaurants and beaches close by and is far more undeveloped than western Crete. What is your agent on???

It is a no, no, no to Iraklion. Make just one day trip there, and that to visit the archeological museum which is good.

Yes, it was a very nice article. I clipped it since I'll be there in a few weeks, but unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll have the time to explore these restaurants (they all seem to be accessible only if you've a car and are located in villages at the end of dirt roads, etc.).

That wasn't easy but the answers by town/village seem to be Agios Nicholaos, Elounda, Ierapetra, Kritsa and Houmeriakos. As to which taverna, I haven't a clue

Thanks, Sheila. That's a beginning. I keep thinking that there must be someone out here old enough to recall the taverna/hotel, if it still exists.
