crete

Hi
I would appreciate any help I could get with advise about where to stay in crete (not hotels...just what part of the island)
We will be in crete for 4 nights and can fly in or out of either heraklia or chania.
It looks like there is alot to see and do in Crete.
we would like a mix of seeing some of the archeological sights and charming towns.
Any advise would be appreciated!

Chania in Western Crete is the best choice. It's a beautiful historical town with access to several beaches.

Thanks Happy Trvl!
would you stay in Chania or one of the beach areas close by?

All famous archeological sites are in the central or Eastern part of the Island. Fly to HER for
Knossos Palace (partly rebuilt)
Iraklio archeological museum
Malia Palace
Phaistos Palace
Aghia Triada

Medieval towns:
Rethymnon
Chania
Heraklion

Beaches: avoid the tourist ghettos around Heraklion. The South coast is much better.

I would stay 3 nights in Chania and would spend the last one in Heraklio.
The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion just reopened, after 8 years of renovation, and you can also visit Knossos. :)
