Crescent Hotel in London
Has anyone stayed at the Crescent Hotel in the Bloomsbury area of London? We are planning on staying there and would appreciate any feedback. Also, would like any good restaurant, pub, etc. recommendations within walking distance from there. Thanks!

Ciao, TerryLFred,
we stayed at the Crescent and enjoyed it. We had a large room with enormous windows facing the crescent and park and it was fairly quiet. The breakfasts were fine in the dining room downstairs, and there's a nice parlour room to sit and read if you are waiting for a bit. The people were very nice and willing to hold bags should you arrive earlier than check in time. Most of their info says to depart at Russell Sq., but that stop was closed when we were there, and truth is, it's almost as easy from Charing Cross; although there's a lot of construction around st. Pancras/Charing Cross that would make Russell Sq. more desirable. You're a nice stroll to The British Museum and a very short hop to the wonderful British Library. If you walk to the end of the crescent that the hotel is closest to, and cross the street, you are a few steps away from The North Sea Restaurant. Wonderful variety of seafood done grilled, fried, baked or whatever. Next door is their take away shop where you can get fish and chips to go; btw there are usually at least 4-5 different types of fish available any day to pair up with your chips! Most of our other meals weren't taken nearby although there are a series of pubs that look like they came from central casting. The hotel keeps a guide and info abut places in the neighborhood as well, and you can check with them. Have a great trip! |
I lived in Bloomsbury for a while last year. They are a bit short on decent restaurants in the immediate vicinity of your hotel (the fish & chip shop excepted). We tried quite a few in the neighbourhood and frequently were very disappointed. However, there are a few good pubs.
However, there are some good restaurant neighbourhoods are within walking distance - south and west of your hotel. Check out Charlotte Street, which is a block or two West of Tottenham Court Road (try walking West on Goodge St to Charlotte St - also a tube stop on the Northern Line). There is a good hotel bar (the Charlotte St Hotel), a good pub immediately across the street (can't remember the name), and a dozen restaurants on Charlotte St and the nearby side streets. Charlotte St is probably a 15-20 minute walk from your hotel. Once you get to Charlotte St, you're really quite close to Soho (which is south of Oxford St, and perhaps another block or two further West). Head in the direction of "Soho Square" and continue South and West. (Another 5-10 minutes from Charlotte St.) You're staying in a university neighbourhood, so there are lots of coffee shops, and lots of people on the street until late at night. It's a very walkable area, and safe. I'm not a fan of Indian food, but I understand that there may be a good restaurant strip North (and a little to the West) of Euston Station. You'll have to ask others for recommendations. |
I realized something in my last post might be a little confusing. Goodge St is the name of the tube stop on the Northern line. Charlotte St is a N-S street that intersects Goodge St. The restaurants are on Charlotte St, and you get there from the Crescent Hotel by finding Totteham Court Road (a major N-S street), walking south to Goodge St, then West to Charlotte St.

Thank you loislane17 and Kate W. We will be in London at the end of May for close to 3 weeks. Can't wait to get there!
