The Breton tradition (and note that Breizh is Breton for Brittany) is that savoury pancakes are called galettes and are made with sarassin, which is not a true wheat. If you are being picky about language, crèpe is the term for a sweet pancake made with a flour batter. The word is also used generically for both savoury and sweet pancakes. |
You can find all sort of crepes in Paris. They can be sweet or salty and you could have an entire meal with them with salty first and sweet as a dessert.
For the salty one I would suggest you cheese, ham and mushrooms. Mushrooms are usually not canned and are very much used in Paris. |
Crèpes to me are among the least interesting foods on the planet. I'm always astonished when folks get all gaga about them, as if they were the quintessential Paris food or something. It's just dough with stuff inside it.You can easily make them at home. That said, you can find them with just about every kind of stuffing imaginable. Galettes are made with sarrasin and come with both sweet and savory fillings, though most often savory.

"Are mushrooms used in them usually canned?"
Yes, 99% of the time. |

I thought that they were not particularly interesting. After seeing so many people here enthuse about them, I bought some when in France last year, just to check. I still think that they are not very interesting. While we are at it, I don't much care for spit-roasted chicken from market stalls, or for ice-cream. I have not eaten a croissant for years, and the last time was to verify that I really don't like them. And a baguette is primarily a vehicle for mopping up good sauces, and for cheese -- not an important eating experience in itself. I love French food. |
Oh now let's not trash the tourists, or we will be told again that the French would be starving without their presence.
|
Well, Padraig and kerouac, we might have to move in together! The chicken is just a chicken and there are 100's of more interesting things to eat. A baguette is just a vehicle for me for some cheese ,sauce or just butter.
I will call the line at ice cream though if it is chestnut! |
Wait in line for ice cream? Just go to Picard and buy all you want!

re <<It's just dough with stuff inside...>>
But I love most things "dough with stuff inside"-- empanadas, dumplings, turnovers, pasties, piroshkis.... (except for "wraps", which taste like stuff rolled in wet newspaper). |
I'm sort of on the same page as Mademoiselle Fifi here. In a way, it seems that saying you don't like crepes is like saying you don't like sandwiches. Its the filling in the(sandwich, crepe, tortilla or whatever) that is of interest. The crepe itself is really just like transport, as is two slices of bread or a tortilla or the empanada dough. Admittedly, there are variations in quality of both the fillings and the transports, but I really struggle to understand why someone would universally dismiss a crepe as uninteresting.
On the other hand, I can say that I unequivocally do not like ice cream. And I never have. With a summer birthday, I was subjected to far more ice cream cakes than I care to remember. But I do love a well made croissant. Actually, I love all carbs. Even if they don't always love me back. :-( |
I hope you have a wonderful time eating any and all the crepes you might enjoy, jetsetj!

I do make crepes at home, frequently. But I also enjoy them as street food in Paris. I consider them, both the sweet and the savory, a sort of comfort food.
I know where to draw the line, however, and would never have both kinds at the same meal. |
Crepes are the best street food in Paris IMO.
I ALWAYS start my trip with the lemon sugar type. It took me a while, but I managed to figure out how to eat it, and walk, and keep it from dripping down my sleeve! Not a huge fan of Nutella - it can be found in many places where I live in the USA and I don't find it all that exciting. ~Jay |
I don't like sandwiches. I don't like any kind of sandwich and it will not ever be a meal to me.
This of course does not mean that I don't choke one down from time to time. |
I found that at the street stands they use nutella but in the cafes they are better and serviced with fruit, I have to jump in an recommend a kir with them or kir royal....cassis with white wine or champagne, then sit back and just unwind.
If you really don't like crepes, get the waffles. I consider them a nice break from a walk but prefer an omlette or quiche with salad for a lunch...with a kir of course. |
Rather than Nutella, find a vendor that makes chocolate crepes with actual 'flats' of dark chocolate, melted after the crepe is thoroughly cooked through.
