Credit cards on the French autoroute
I promised to report on whether or not our card worked at the toll booths on the autoroutes, and it did--at least on the one between Cannes and Nice, the only one we used.

We tried it in the central France & it worked fine. Several days later it did not - we tried several cards. The machine did not return our ticket, and 5 cars were lined up behind us. Never again !!!

Ours worked fine for the first 4 or 5 times we used a CC for at toll stations in northern France, which were not manned by operators.
Until we arrived at Chamonix.
Then the card we had been using was rejected by a toll booth operator but a back up CC with a different company was accepted.
We used the back up card for tolls for the rest of the trip

I have used unmanned toll booths all over France for the 6 years I have lived here. My visa has been accepted all the time and my american express depends on the region the toll booth is in as not all toll roads are managed by the same company. I have had a toll booth decline my mothers mastercard in the past but since we had more than one card it wasnt an issue. You can also use the call button to talk to an agent if a problem persists. IMHO the large amount s of time saved at the larger toll plazas by using unmanned booths is completely worth it.

We just returned from France and used our credit cards at toll boths from Pais to Rouen to Bayeux, then out to Mont St. Michel and down through the Loire Valley and back to Paris. Never had a problem. Loved doing it this way.
