Credit cards not working in Italy?????

Nope, never a problem. I mainly use my debit card, without a chip, but CC also works fine, or at least has in the past.

This is an old problem. Some places do not know that they can swipe the card in the slot at the top of the scanner rather than pushing it in. How you handle that linguistically is another question.

Never had any problems in Italy, in France and in England some cards have to be hand entered because they are almost all chip embedded and US cards are not. Guess we will be next for the chip embedding.

I had absolutely NO problems with my credit cards in Italy.

And I have the statements to prove it!! :)

The only place I've ever had a problem is at some unattended gas stations in France. But almost everyone I know has had that problem and figured out not to buy gas when there's only a machine and no human.

Unattended toll booths are similar to unattended gas stations.
