>distinguish between 50 cents coin and 1 euro coin
Easy!, just touch the rim, it's also simple to distinguish that from a 20ct coin.

I suppose you're right but if they knew then what we know now...how much the euro would be worth, the least they could have done is made it nice and thick....

"Electronic Cash", formerly "Eurocheque", the standard german debit card also known as "Maestro-card" nowadays. Foreign Maestro cards should also work, but you never know for sure if the merchant accepts them.

All german bank accounts come with a (most of the time free) EC card. Since every German over the age of 16 years and an o.k. credit history who has a bank account also has this card, and fees are lower for the merchant, it is preferred over any other card.

It's far too thick. The DM coins were nice and small, those fu***ing € don't fit into my porte-monnaie.

I agree that in this electronic age the merchant should get the money almost immediately, but it seems they don't. I have heard from several people that the now refuse foreign cards for the reason I stated, not for fear of fraud. Some shops charge a handling fee for creditcards here, I think in the hope of putting people off using them.
I get the impression that credit cards are not widely used by the Dutch anyway, maybe because other forms of electronic payment are so easy.
I hardly ever use my credit card at home, but have had it queried twice now because they know I am English.
I use my "PIN" card (Maestro) or y CHIP (electronic wallet) for nearly all my payments, hardly ever have any cash on me. 50c for the supermarket trolley is about as much as I carry normally!
For purchases online within Holland or (to a lesser extent) within Europe) I can use electronic banking to pay. I purchased a new lens for my camera Thursday. I made the payment Thursday afternoon, the merchant recieved the payment Friday morning, and, according to the potal service website, my lens is due to be delivered this morning.
I love the internet!

Sadly it doesn't help with paying for things once your on holiday though.
