Credit Cards, ATM Cards, Travelers Checks
I will be traveling to Ireland in November and want to know what method of payment generally gives you the best conversion rate. I have been told to bring a credit card and not to bring travelers checks but to use an ATM card. Are there numerous ATM's around, like the airport? I am going to need a minimum of 50 Irish pounds the first day I get there which is Saturday (banks are closed).

kathy, Do not use travellers checks or US$ cash. Credit card or ATM is your best bet. There were ATM's in the airport in UK and they gave great exchange rates. Credit cards are a little less favorable but you don't have to pay right away like with an ATM. There were lots of ATMs in Scotland. I picked bank of scotland which did not charge fee. my local bank here in florida still charges usual rip off fee. as a last resort i would convert minimim US$ (like 50) if you can't find an ATM at Shannon or Dublin airport.

I make it a practice to have two credit cards, different issues, and a few US$ travelers checks. There have been occasions where my credit card would not "read" in the reader and when I could not find an ATM that worked. <BR>I can relate instances were both events happened to me. The checks are useful here at home. I don't plan on financing the whole trip with them, but the times I have needed one or two, they were invaluable.

We only used our credit union issued atm card while in Ireland this summer. Dublin airport has several machines as does Shannon. I withdrew 200 punts at a time and this worked well. We found atms in every town we were in. It would be a good idea to have two different cards just in case....I had my atm card and had a debit card that withdraws money from your checking or savings account. Enjoy your trip. I hope to return in the near future.
