credit cards at Italian supermarkets?

Planning a trip to Tuscany--Florence and Lucca--and and plan to cook some meals at the villas we're renting. I was wondering if Italian supermarkets accept credit cards?

Absolutely! I used my Visa all the time at the supermarkets in Rome, Florence, Livorno, etc. They took Visa, MC, but no AMEX.

......no trouble using Visa in Montevarchi at the Co-op.

Is there a COOP or other large market near Siena?

We had no trouble using credit cards at the supermarkets, either in the cities or out in the countryside. We didn't get to Tuscany, only Umbria, but the supermarket we liked best there was the Super A & O. It might be in Tuscany, too, so keep an eye out for it. The produce was very fresh, the frozen foods were delicious (we had a prepared lasagna dish that gave some of our restaurant meals a run for the money, can you believe!) and the wine was extensive, AND dirt cheap.

Be aware that some smaller supermarkets in Italy accept only cash and ATM cards, and not credit cards. Many of the larger markets, particularly in large cities, also take credit cards.

mozart,

There is at least one hyper-Co-op in Siena, outside the gates, and easy to reach with a car. (So easy, in fact, that we used that parking lot for our day in Siena, and did our grocery shopping before heading back to our rented house. That was probably not quite cricket....)
