Shouldn't have any problem at MOST places, but we always carry extra cash in the local currency, plus some US money tucked away. And bring more than one kind of credit card too.

Jobart,

I agree with Cheryl's comments: bring multiple credit cards. You will likely find that American Express is probably more widely accepted at restaurants and shops in Europe than are Visa and Mastercard. Also, when making reservations or on entering a restaurant for a meal, definitely ask about what credit cards they take. This will keep you from having an "after dinner surprise".

I respectfully disagree. I found that Visa and Mastercard are much widely accepted in Europe tha AMEX. It seems that AMEX charges European business a higher fee than do Visa and Mastercard. A few small business, stores, bars, restaurants, sometimes don't accept credit cards.

Surlok is right. Take a visa or mastercard and leave the american express at home!! Not many places accept amex.

American Express much less widely accepted than Visa or MasterCard in Europe. Especially notable in shops, but also in restaurants.

Note that MasterCard is called EuroCard in Europe, though you'll recognize the interlocking circles in the logo.

You'll find that credit card acceptance (of one brand or another) is almost as high in Europe as in the US, though significantly less so off the beaten track. While expensive restaurants in tourist-beaten areas are almost certain to accept credit cards, less expensive, more "typical" restaurants may not accept cards. When planning the amount of cash we'll need for a trip I always >budget< lunches to be paid for in cash, thouh we're able to use cards more than half the time in most places.

Ed and Surlock have given the most accurate information (based on my experience, at least). I've never had my Amex refused, but based on frequent reports on the forum, Visa and MasterCard are more wide accepted.
