Credit card fees overseas

Here is an interesting article (and depressing too) about VISA/MC fees on overseas purchases. It was in the SF Chronicle today. It's getting more difficult all the time to avoid these outrageous fees!

The article says nothing new that we haven't seen or posted here as of yet....

MBNA for some unknown reason has not extended the currency rip off charge to all of its cards...as of now I have cards with AAA, MLB and the NHL from them. None of them, at least as of now, have informed me they are instituting this rip off fee.

USAA has not instituted the 2% yet but are passing along the rip off 1% on currency conversion done by the merchant (although why anybody would allow a merchant to pull this scam is beyond me)....

At least, for the time being, Amex remains at 2% (somebody wrote they had gotten notified by Amex it was increasing to 3%)

None of this should be surprising as long as people don't go to cards which don't pull these shenanigans the banks will continue to rip off their customers.

Someone should bring a class-action lawsuit against these banks for charging for a "non-service".

We received notice this week from MBNA that the international charge was being raised to 3% on MAY 25th-the day we return from our trip to Switzerland and Italy. Maybe until we make another trip it will be changed again(lowered).

I know this is an old thread, but I have been receiving notices from 2 of the CCards I was using in Europe regarding an industry wide class action lawsuit. Does anyone else know anything about it??

My main concern is, how would agreeing to participate affect my credit card rates? (Hard to know!)
They have already offered an "easy refund of 25 dollars, but that is a bargain basement figure in my case.

Does anyone know about this lawsuit?

Here's a long, recent thread on the same topic. There have been several others in the last month.
