Credit Card CDW Coverage
I recently applied for and received a Chase World MasterCard.
This particular card happens to be an IHG (Holiday Inn) co-branded card. While reading the rules concerning CDW, I understood that there are no exclusions anywhere in the world. I called the Chase customer service line and I was told I understood correctly. This was of particular interest to me for travel to Ireland and Italy where the excess can be problematic. The excess coverage is also primary, which is very nice. I am understanding that most Chase cards are going to include this coverage worldwide. |
Sher,
Ireland can be problematic in regards to CDW when renting a car and some companies won't even allow you to rent without purchasing insurance through them. I know that World MasterCard is one of the VERY few cards that offers coverage in Ireland but you'll still need to prove that you're covered to the company you are renting through. Be sure to bring written proof from your credit card stating that you are indeed covered in Ireland (specifically) and call the location you plan on renting from ahead of time to make sure they will allow you to use your credit card coverage. So long as you do this you shouldn't have a problem! |
A friend told me that when she declined CDW coverage in Europe because her credit card covered it - the rental agency put a hold charge thru on her c card as a damage deposit for not getting the optional CDW - then she found that her credit card was maxed out and would not work because it had reached its credit limit.

Usually if the rental agency does that the hold they put is just the deductible - $500 or $1000 - van't imagine they would put a hold on the whole cost of the car.
And yes, if going to europe many places (hotels etc) will put holds on your card that take several days to be removed so you need to be sure you have significantly more credit than you plan to actually spend. |
I also believe that the hold would only be for the excess.
I think it foolish to take a credit card to Europe and to use the same card to rent a car if you do not have sufficient credit available. |
The section on credit card coverage describes the charge the rental car company can place on a card if not taking rental company's CDW, and a recommendation to carry additional card to pay other expenses.
