CREDIT CARD
Need comments/advice on giving credit card details in a word document. Apparently, the B&B where we are intending to stay in the Trastevere area have requested the details on the booking form (word document) - not to pay for the accommodation up front - but for guarantee only. Is it safe to give me credit card details this way?

I can't see how that would be a problem. Unless they have break-ins on their computer, who else will see your info? Some places want a FAX in which anyone in the office can see your info. I have replied with this info many times with no problem either thru a FAX or on their website.
In my opinion, your credit card info is out there for anyone to steal every time you charge something. It could make you crazy trying to keep everything secret and safe. |
How will you transmit the Word document? that's the real concern. FAX - would not worry. Email attachment - a little riskier. Online via secure server - probably OK.
If you are really worried tell them you would prefer to send the card # in two separate email messages, 8 digits in each message. |
If you transmit your credit card data piecemeal over two or three transmissions, your data should be secure. You can inform the hotel by phone or a separate e-mal. The hotel will then be able to recombine the data in the correct order, while hackers go after easier pickings.

We get this sort of question every week or so.
You give your credit card to a waiter to take away and run your tab - right? That is more dangerous than sending the info via e-mail. If you are really nervous -- then send 2 e-mails. That's overkill IMO, but do it if it makes you feel better. But honestly, you are covered for fraudulent cc uses . . . . . |
Hi kaz,
Why do you care? You have zero liability for fraudulent use of your card. Maximum of $50 even if you were at fault. ((I)) |
<<< Why do you care? You have zero liability for fraudulent use of your card. >>>
CC company would claim that you didn't take enough care of your CC & hence make you liable. |
Normal use (sending cc info to book a place, ordering something on-line, etc.) is not "un-safe use of a cc". If it was -- giving your credit card to a waiter and having it out of your site for 5 minutes would be as well.
Just mis-placed concern IMO. |
Thanks all - I am confident it all be ok......I was probably just being a bit over cautious.
