Crazy to go in October or November?
 

My husband is military, and with that, we are able to travel to Iceland on a military flight for free. We are beginning to tentatively plan a trip overseas anywhere from mid-late September through Mid-November.<BR><BR>That said, Iceland is a desirable destination for us. Would we be crazy to travel there during that timeframe? <BR><BR>In addition to weather concerns, are there any major holidays we should avoid (business closures, throngs of people, etc) or just general advice as to why we should consider going elsewhere? <BR><BR>Thank you in advance!

Hi! I was in Iceland in October last year and had a great time. The weather was cool, of course, but there were some beautiful days and Thingvellir is an absolute tapestry at that time of year. I would choose September or October rather than November, if possible, just because you'll be getting more hours of daylight.<BR>I've never actually seen throngs of people in Iceland...and if you can go, by all means: GO! It's a wonderful place. One caveat, of course, is that it can be expensive, but you can always stretch the budget with some hot dog lunches (especially from the place down by the harbor.)<BR>Have a great trip!

Hi Melissa, I travelled to Iceland twice, once in October and once in January. Both times were fabulous. my bro-in-law was in military and was stationed in Keflavik, where i'm sure you'll be flying into. Of course, both Keflavik and Reykjavik are right on the water, so they never get ridiculously cold (negative #s, etc). the weather was actually fun. we'd get a blustery snow storm at 8 am and then by noon, the sun would be out and it would be warm enough for my niece and I to frolic in the snow! Also, in October, we had virtually every place to ourselves. We drove to Vatnajokyll (sp?) national park and literally saw no one else for hours! Have fun. both my trips were fabulous!

Sorry Melissa, I forgot one caveat that turned out to be very important. Once we left the Reykjavik/Keflavik area, very few folks spoke english. we were able to get by with gestures, being ugly americans and not knowing much of the native tongue. Also, when driving long distances (like the Vatnajokyll trip), we had a problem finding any gas stations, let alone those that were open! and when we finally found one, they did not take credit cards. I luckily had a few kronar in my pocket, but that was totally dumb luck. I'd be more than happy to converse more with you about the trip if you'd like. just contact me at my email address.
