cow bells
 

My mother-in-law is a big time bell collector. I had read in my Eyewitness guide book that once the cows are brought in from the mountains the bells around their necks are sold. I thought this would be a very unusual bell for her collection. Does anyone know if I could buy one in Vienna or Salzburg? Thanks

I have a Swiss bell, and I doubt that they are sold every year. It just would be too expensive. But you might be able to find some at flea markets--there's a big one in Vienna.

Swiss bell? Worn by a live cow? Wonder if my husband will appreciate if I bring this as a Swiss souvenier. Naw, he'll make me wear it!

I have seen such bells in Salzburg but don't have any names of specific shops.

I bought three miniature Swiss cow bells (about 3" X 3" with a decorated leather strap) in Zurich in a tiny booth near the lake. I gave two to friends, who also collect bells, and kept one for myself. We use them as Christmas tree ornaments. I would think you might find something similar in Austria.

Most of those real cowbells will put you way over your luggage weight limit. Just a word of caution!

Replicas are easy to find (or at least in Switzerland they are everywhere) of varying qualities and price.

The real bells used on cows are very BIG. I've seen them in Switzerland, but they were ON the cows who were "dressed up" in flowers etc for parades down in the towns.

Many years ago I started collecting cow bells. They are readily available all over Southern Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Northern Italy. More recently my interests have turned to elephant bells from Southeast Asia. They are far more unique and diverse. Happy hunting!

I collect cow bells, too! :) I'm sure you can find new and used ones around Salzburg. They come in all sizes and there are also smaller goat bells. Hope you find a cool one!
