covid testing for return to US

DH and I are heading to Portugal and ending in Paris in May. i'm trying to plan for all possibilities.
i know we have to be tested to enter Portugal and tested to return to the US from Paris.
so my question is, what do you do if you test positive? obviously contact the airlines to change your flight. Do you have to report it to some agency in france, and what about a hotel? are there specific quarantine hotels that you need to go to, or do you try to work it out with the hotel you are staying at (extend stay). we are staying in Paris on points and the cost of several extra nights at this particular hotel for us would be prohibitive. would appreciate any insight
