Cours Mirabeau cafes
 

Are they tourist traps? I hear that Les deux garçons has horrible service. We would love some recommendations: we like good food in unpretentious surroundings - and good service is a bonus.

I don't much believe in the concept of tourist traps as I don't think tourists are ever forced to go anywhere. Now that would be a trap! A tourist willingly and voluntarily choosing to sit in a cafe of their choice cannot (to me) be a "trap".

It's just a cafe, how bad can coffee and service be. I don't go to places like that for meals much, though, although perhaps a snack. I haven't eaten full dinners in any cafe on the Cours Mirabeau, just breakfast and drinks at times.

We spend 2 months in France almost every year. We've had 4-5 lunches at Deux Garcons. It's one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a lunchtime. One of the best places in France to people-watch. Make sure you reserve in advance and ask for a table in the shade. You'll hear lots of French, American English, British English, etc. We've never had service there that's any different from other places for lunch in France.

I didn't think the cafes on the Cours were so great. The worst food and service we had in Aix. There are far more interesting places to be, north and south of the Cours, in this wonderful city.

You don't go to a cafe on the Cours for a great meal.

You go to watch people.

The refreshments are the price of the seat at the show.

We once sat at the Deux Garcons for almost 40 minutes without ever being approached by a waiter. Terrible service or free show? I am a half full kind of guy, so I enjoyed the show.
