County Kerry

I have not yet had the pleasure of traveling to Ireland but during my very frequent internet travels on the country I ran accross a photograph of a UNICORN STATUE in the Co Kerry area.

Does anyone know the story behind this statue or know where I can find such information? Why, when, by whom was it erected, etc.?

I don't know the exact location, but it is along the N22 The main Macroom to Killarney road. There is also a large statue of King Puck (Male Goat) at the Bridge leading into Killorglin, Co Kerry, where the Puck Fair is held every year.

Bob is right. I saw them on my last trip. I'd been looking out for them as I'd read about them in IRELAND OF THE WELCOMES.

Thank you so much for your replies. At least I know I didn't fall prey to a 'computer manipulated image' and that the statue does exist.

I take it IRELAND OF THE WELCOMES is a book?

Ireland of The Welcomes is a magazine that comes out every 2 months. If I had my back issues I'd look up the information for you, but I always pass them on to other lovers of Ireland. They do have a web site. Maybe you could get some info there. Good Hunting, Joan

Joan,

Thank you, I was able to find the back issue on line and have ordered it to get the full article. At least I'm making progress into the mystery. Of course now I have to be patient while the magazine makes its way to the US.

Rosalind, If you think of it please post back and fill me in on what I've forgotten. Glad you found it. Regards, Joan

Hello, rosalindeb,

If you cannot wait for your Ireland of the Welcomes magazine to come, go to:

Helen,

I'm echoing Joan's thanks for the article link. Is this the complete article or will there be more in the mag?

Me again - does anyone know of a source for photos of ALL the statues along the Kerry Scuplture Road?

Couldn't find any map postings, but the work was commisioned by the Kerry County Council and the works run from the Cork/Kerry border to Killarney, along the N22.
I DID find this, however. You could write or call or drop in and see if THEY have a map ...

O'Donoghue/Ross Sculpture Park and Gallery
Ros Abu, Shronaboy, Glenflesk, Co Kerry
Tighe O'Donoghue/Ross, Eoghan, O'Donoghue/Ross, D'Ana O'Donoghue/Ross

By the way, the O'Donoghue/Ross chieftains were the original builders of Ross Castle, in Killarney.
