Countryside day trip outside Paris

Hello Everyone,
I'd like to get any tips/suggestions on where to go for a day to visit a beautiful small town outside of Paris??
Thanks.

I have a friend visiting from Mexico at the moment. Today we took the train the Chantilly to see the horse museum, the chateau and the incredible gardens/domain.

Saturday we will take the train to Auvers-sur-Oise to see the place that inspired Vincent Van Gogh and where he is buried.

Both trains leave from Gare du Nord.

Thank you Kerouac for your suggestions.
I will look it up online.

Beautiful small town - how small - kerouac's suggestions are nice - I especially like Auvers-sur-Oise as it is a village rather than suburb like Chantily. Compeignie would be another small town with famous castle. Chartres could be a small town to some -if comparing say to Paris anyway and famous Gothic cathedral - Reims bigger town with Champagne tours and superb cathedral - all easy day trips by train.

What time of year?

Will you already have visited Monet's house and garden at Giverny? Versailles?

Consider Evreux, Chartres, Reims...

StCirq Jun 14th, 2018 10:47 AM

Senlis, Moret-sur-Loing, Pierrefonds, Auvers-sur-Oise, Compiègne (Pal's spelling is off), Poitiers, Vaux-le-Vicompte, Fontainebleau....there are dozens.

Vaux le Vicomte> tells about the castle there and town - (StCirq's spelling is off) but that place is not so easy to reach by public transportation - get ones with direct rail service. Vaux-le-Vicomte is out in the cuntryside but a wonderful place.

Vaux-le-Vicomte (St, Cirq's spelling is off). :)

edit: Pal beat me to it!

StCirq Jun 14th, 2018 11:24 AM

Sorry, I always do that. Always concerned about my French bak account, I guess;)

Compiegne is a very nice small town, I think Auvers-sur-Oise feels more like a village than it does, of course, because it is (Compiegne is about 40K population, not exactly rural). I'd choose on my interests, of course.

I have already visited Versailles in 2016.
Next year I want to visit Monet's house.

Thank you StCirQ
I am looking at pictures and articles right now about Auvers-sur-Oise and Fountainbleu. I'm interested in these two.

Thank you all!
I just research Fountainbleu chateu. IT'S SOOO BEAUTIFUL!!

PalenQ Jun 14th, 2018 12:18 PM

Fontainebleu-Avon is the train station from Gare de Lyon probably - no need to pre-book as is a commuter rail line. Station about a mile from famous chateau and about 35 miles from Paris.

Thank you PalenQ you are very helpful.:blowkiss:
By the way I spelled Fontainebleu wrong. My apologies :)

If you start early to Blue Fontain (?) as there is not all that much to see and do in the small twin towns consider taking a cab out into the Forest of Fountainebleu to Barbizon, one of the famous places where artists hung out some time ago:

may be too much though but very possible.

Here was a fun day we had going to both Chateau Vaux le Vicomte and Chateau de Fontainebleau by bus (with lots of photos).
