We are driving from Venice to the cruise port north of Rome on Sept 21. We want to to take a different route than Rome to Venice via Florence. We thought we might head west to the coast then drive down to Civitavecchia. We want to break the trip up by staying in a sweet town along the way. Can anyone recommend a place to stop ?

Do you have time to stop? Do you even have time to make this trip? Are you boarding the ship for sailing that evening from Civitavecchia?
According to www.viamichelin.com, the fastest way is about 7 hours, non-stop. The coastal route you mentioned is about 8 hours, non-stop. If you add time it takes to retrieve your car from a parking lot in Venice, or time to rent a car if you need to rent a car that morning, adding time needed to drop your car at Civitavecchia and be on board on time, if that is what you are doing, how much time do you have left?

I would get an early start and take a more direct route, skipping the western coast. Drive south from Venice on SS309. If you haven't already been to Ravenna and have any interest in mosaics, stop there to see a couple of the UNESCO Heritage sites and have lunch. Continue to Bagno di Romagna, a Roman trading and spa town, and spend the night. You'll find a wide range of lodging and restaurants. Venice to Bagno di Romagna without stops would take about 4.5 hours.

The next day, continue driving secondary roads (SR71) south to Montepulciano for a lunch stop and short wander, then head to Civitavecchia. This day's drive would take 5.5 hours without any stops.
