Country with the best food?
 

From your travel experiences, (besides France and Italy...), which country do you feel has the best food?

isn't that like asking what perfume smells the best? Everyone's taste is different..and why the heck did you take France and Italy out of the mix?

Given the ground rules (leaving out France and Italy), I would say Switzerland. That might be surprising to some people, but I've always found a high level of consistency to Swiss eating establishments--there just aren't many clunkers, and the best are very good with excellent service..

Ye, you're probably right about the perfume, ha. I guess I was asking a more general questions, about which countries are known for their great food. I took France and Italy out of the mix because I've already been there and loved every minute of it...and the food. However, my husband and I are planning on taking our 3 teens to Germany this year and while we are looking forward to all of the sites, no one is exactly thrilled with the type of food in Germany. So I was wondering...what other countries are knows to have really good food?

My DH and I were pleasantly surprised by German food...we loved it! Of course, we are picky eaters and neither of us eat seafood so Germany seemed easier to eat in that some other countries that serve a lot more seafod.

I also loved the food in Switzerland. Rosti is a favorite of mine, but anything smothered in cheese works for me!

I know what kind of food is in Greece, but what kind of food is popular in Austria and Czech Rep?

Germany! Meat and pasta (137 dishes). Beer. Pastries. Beer. Sausages (326 varieties). Beer. Cream sauces. Beer.

2nd Place: Belgium. See above.

Austria does have good food (much of it similar to Germany, but depending on where you are in Austria it can also on the flavors of the surrounding countries), but when I think of Austria I always think of the delicious pastries. Wonderful chocolate croissants and heavenly apfelstruedels!

The beer, pastries, beer, pastas, beer and cream sauces sound wonderful, it's the 326 varieties of sausage that concerns me, ha.

I'm happy to say that I spent two weeks in Germany/Austria in May and did not eat a single sausage! On the other hand, I think I had a schnitzel at least once a day... :)

Italian hands down (way better than French)

But if you must exclude Italy then Belgian food (again above French)

The country is a bit of a brokendown mess but Belgians do know how to eat!

I've always enjoyed my meals in GermanY!

My picks would be Belgium and Spain.

Greece and Spain. However, it is much easier to find delicious food in France and Italy. In Greece and Spain you have to really look for the good food. It helps to have lists of recommended restaurants.

My vote definatley goes to Spain tho I have not been to Greece and think it would be good too. With Spain tho, I think sometimes you have to be a little more aware, do some research - there is alot of fatty meat that may not be appealing but there are many other dishes that are yummy. I love the tapas menus. And roast suckling pig is delicious, plus all kinds of good seafood - shrimp in spicy olive oil, fish baked in a salt crust, calamri......I don't even like paella that much but I still vote for Spain. I enjoyed Amsterdam too, the brown cafes and Indonesian food.....not too sure what the actual dutch cuisine is. Switz...food expensive! and I am not a fan of German food except the pastry!

When I was in Prague I ate Greek, French and Italian food. I did had a fabulous bowl of goulash, which I think was the only traditional meal I had.

Ummmmm, Austrian and Czech, respectively. :)

In both countries:

knoedels, beer, wursts, pastries, noodles, wienerschnitzel in Austria, wild game (especially boar) in the CR.

In Vienna, Kaffee mit schlag and the light, fruity white wines are particularly good.

I think that Prague has the world's best bagels.
