Country calling codes for my UK cell phone to the USA

Ok, so I got a cell phone to use in Italy that has a UK phone number so I'm really calling from the UK to the US when in Europe. The only problem is I went to http://www.countrycallingcodes.com and it says dial "00 1*" Does anyone know if you have to dial the asterisk? I want to program numbers into my phone and want it to come out properly.

Hi b,

You dial 00 to get out of the UK
You dial 1 to get into the US.

to make simple things a litlle more complex, according to the GSM standards, the 00 in the begining (access to international) may be replaced by an *

Tge FrequentFlyer example would be either:
001-123-555-1212
*1-123-555-1212

The rational is that although most of countries use 00 to the international, some exceptions might occur. To prevent this an * in the begining replaces the acces to the international, whatever this code might be.

note: Only celulars in the GSM world
