Couldn't get to Paris for our trip...advice on insurance.
We couldn't get out to Paris Thursday for our month long trip which included the Dordogne, Burgundy, etc. We did get insurance and hope it will pay for our rental car cancellation costs. We also have one place in the Dordogne which calls for a 30 day cancellation.We hope he will adjust this. I am not sure there will be an allowance for Mother Nature...
If there is any advice on handling the insurance or dealing with the above, would appreciate it. We will end up just going to Paris if we ever get out.We did get Sunday air but that is cancelled...

As far as to whether or not your insurance policy covers you, loisco, you need to contact the insurance company. Do read the contract in the policy before calling them. Best wishes to you and I am sorry your holiday plans were so disrupted.

I would agree with Judy, Spanish Airports are open and Rome is open ( I would be concerned about Nice as the 'Red Line' is hovering, at times near it).
It will cost you extra but your insurance may pay for the inconvenience.
Paris is shut down, probably until Monday (and perhaps longer)unless the wind changes.

My advice is to call everybody you need to cancel with, or delay, and see what they will offer.
Slightly different situation, but we were scheduled to fly to France for 10 days on Sept. 13, 2001. I had to make a lot of last-minute calls, but everyone, regardless of cancellation policies, was very understanding and did not charge us any cancellation fees. (We ended up making that trip later, in Spring, 2002.)

Check the website for your travel insurance provider. Most have updated information regarding coverage for this particular event.
Note that most policies require you to cancel with travel providers within a certain period of time of finding out you cannot go as planned, and also require you to collect anything that's refundable before the coverage applies.

Even after the volcano calms down, it's going to take the airlines many days before they can sort out schedules, reservations and position planes/crews in the right cities. Remember post-9/11? I don't know what I'd do if I were you, but I hate feeling unsettled/insecure about travel plans. I'd probably re-book for September and pursue refunds and insurance claims.
