Cottage in St. Andrews, Scotland!!
 

We have an opportunity to rent a cottage in St. Andrews from an American friend. Is this an interesting area?? Things to do...places to see?? We do love exploring, hiking, pubs, food etc. Three couples, all old friends in our late 40's. Any suggestions?

Yes great place. St Andrews university town with the usual accotrements. Highlands not too far away as in Edinburgh - about an hour by train from nearby Leuchars. Stirlin, a must, also easy by train. if have car all the better - drive into the Highlands in a few miles. St Andrews has smashing seaside location. Golf? all the better. I can't imagine a better location for a 'cottage'.

If any of you are golfers it is of course a no brainer. But even w/o golf there a ton to see/do in and near Fife.

Besides Edinburgh, my short list would include:
- St Andrews castle and cathedral
- the old course on a Sunday - they don't play on sundays so it becomes a vast public park
- Falkland Palace/gardens and a hike up the Lomomd Hills just outside of the village.
- the fishing villages - mainly Crail/Anstruther/Pittenweem
- 1/2 day boat trip to the Isle of May - from the harbor in Anstruther. On the island you'll see puffins and many other sea birds up close, some ruined lighthouses, a deserted village - just a terrific day out
- Hill of Tarvitt House - a lovely Edwardian house/gardens
- Loch Leven Castle
a bit farther away but still very easy drives -- Dollar Glen/Castle Campbell, Glamis Castle, Culross and Scone Palace.

Absolutely. Masses to do in Fife. Lomond Hills and the Fife Coastal Path for hiking. Tons of interesting and old villages to explore round,pubs coming out of your ears, and some of the best restaurants in the country.

Also, well located to go further afield- at least on the east coast.

Umm, the old cynic seems to think it might be cold in St Andrews.

It entirely depends on what you wear:)
