Costa Del Sol or Costa Blanca?

WE are planning a summer holiday to Spain and have finally narrowed our it down to 2 child friendly villas with gated pools etc. in Competa or Playa Flamenca. I'm guessing by the descriptions that PF is more commercial and touristy compared to the village of Competa but all we really need is a supermarket and a few restaurants as there will be 2 x 2 year olds with us! Any advice would be gratefully received about the area, driving time from Malaga airport etc if in Costa Del Sol and suggested daytrips.

I am only familiar with the area around Competa, which is not far from Malaga.
Competa is a good choice, especially in (a hot) summer, when more moderate temps and some mountain breeze make a better climate than further downhill.
Supermercados are available in (almost) every village - but often they resemble more a convinience store in size than what you may consider a supermarket. Big sized supermarkets are called hipermercados in Spain, and the next from Competa is near Velez-Málaga (NOT Málaga), appr. 20km from Competa. But there is no real need to drive there, since you can get everything from the local stores as well.

Playa Flamenca seems to be a MUCH longer drive from Malaga airport (appr 430km vs. 60km). Alicante airport could be the better gateway for PF than Malaga.
