Costa Del Sol
Message: Hi, Will be in Torremolinos middle of March.
Any hints on neat places to eat? Also appreciate any tips on tours or tour operators to use. Want to go to Mijas, Ronda, The Alhambra. Lot's of negative comment on the day trip to Tangier. What do you think? Thanks a bunch guys. Bob & Karen in Florida |
Hi Bob,
We were there about the same time, two years ago. Try the seafood restaurants in La Carihuela, which I have heard are recommended, although we did not actually try them out. As for us, we spent most of our food money at a restaurant/bar called Columbus which specializes in Finnish dishes at an unbeatable price - three courses (soup, salad and main course plus a little shot of liquor served with your bill!). The hearty food was delicious, especially the salmon soup with dill which tasted pretty close to homemade. Now, eating Finnish food in Spain may not interest you, but Torremolinos is also famous for its British, German and Scandinavian restaurants and bars owned by the many expats who live there, so you have quite a selection to choose from. Enjoy! |
Be sure to try "paella" - excellent but unfortunately I didn't note the restaurant I visited. Just ask at your hotel but try for a restaurant other than the hotel. As to Tangier, unless you just want to "say" you've been to Morocco or are staying in Torremolinos long enough, I would pass. It's not a "pretty" city and really isn't representative of Morocco. The boat trip is approx. 2 1/2 hours each way. Mijas, Ronda and Granada were definitely worth trips.

During our trip to Spain, we spent a couple of days in Gibraltar in order to take a day trip to Tangier.
Basically, we were roadtripping and figured that we were so close, we'd go for it and hit another country and continent. Someone once described Tangier as "the Tijuana of Morocco." It definitely has that "other worldly" feel, especially when you see people in traditional dress and are immersed in the Arabic language. However, it is also very touristy. You get the sense that "they've been expecting you..." Lots of people go over, and are taken through the same "process." You see the same basic buildings and scenery, sit on a camel for a hot minute, go to the marketplace, a pharmacy, a carpet shop, a restaurant for lunch, etc... We did all of this with a private guide, so he took us away from the huge bus tours which helped. But in no way does this reflect the rest of Morocco. If only we had more time...Hope this helps. |

Thanks to those who have replied to our original posting. The food hints sound great. I think we are going to pass on the one day trip to Tangier. So much to see & do on the Spain side, right?

Hi Bob and Karen,
I am going to Spain in 10 days for 2 weeks. I'm spending 2 days in Ronda and a day and 1/2 in Granada. I am renting a car from Sevilla (after spending 3 days there) and dropping it off in Granada for this part of my trip. Look for my trip report toward the end of February - maybe it will help you.
