Costa Brava to Barcelona

I made a few adjustments to our Costa Brava trip.
We will fly Sunday night or Monday morning from Granada to Girona, rent a car and stay in Cadaques Monday and Tuesday nights. Then we will take two days to make our way back to Barcelona. We want to visit the Dali sights and other museums. Does anyone have a suggestion for the other two nights?

The stone village of Peratallada. We stayed there for 2 nights years ago in a place called La Riera.

La Bisbal d'Emporada is close for pottery, Ulltraset for ruins etc etc.

The Greco-Roman ruins of Empúries and the tiny walled town of Sant Martí d'Empúries with an impressive 11th century church.

Halfway between Roses and Figueres, the town of Castelló d'Empúries, boasts a very rich architectural patrimony since it was the former capital of the Counts of Empúries, with the standout being the Church of Santa María, called the "Empordà cathedral". Its portal is wonderfully well preserved and inside it houses a beautiful alabaster altarpiece.
Market day there-Tues. and Sun.

(we once based in a rustic restaurant with rooms right outside of town)

Ditto to the Iberian settlement north of Ullastret,

the medieval villages of Pals (a little too *perfectly* well preserved, though),

Peratallada,

Monells (no souvenir shops, just very pretty porticoed squares and flower lined streets with a river running through it)

Torroella de Montgrí is a very pleasant, much larger town with an atmospheric rambla an impressive Gothic church-and the castle of Montgrí outside of town. This is a far more lively place than the tiny medieval villages around it, and it holds an international music festival in the summer.

In addition to Peratallada with its small inns, the pretty medieval town of Ullastret in the Baix Empordà, has a lovely inn with restaurant that could make a nice two night base

milliebest,
Forgot to mention the very obvious-the wonderful city of Girona, but I assumed it might also be on your itinerary as a day trip.

Another place in the Gavarres, right outside of Girona, that would make both a very upscale and relaxing spot to relax is the Racó de Madremanya, if it fits your budget.

Thanks all.

Maribel - would Gavarres be a place to stop for meal between Cadaques and Barcelona... We'd be driving on a Friday.

I'd love to find some beautiful country or small town setting for lunch - maybe with a view ;-). I was so intrigued by the other recommendation - near Girona - I don't have the name in front of me - but they'll be closed during the week.

thanks.

Hi sfmaster,
I think you're referring to La Plaça in Madremanya in the Gavarres. You might want to email them to know if they're open for lunch on Fri. in Sept.

The different guides I have give conflicting information. I would hate for you to miss it if indeed they are open! It's a truly beautiful place with fabulous food.

Just 4 km. away, in Sant Martí Vell, you have the Restaurant La Riera, which would be open for Fri. lunch from 1:30-3:30.

Thanks, I will certainly do my homework on those suggestions.

I think I would like to stay in Girona or Figueres on our way back. Does anyone have a hotel or restaurant suggestion?

Maribel Jun 23rd, 2009 09:50 AM

I have several but in what price range for your lodging?

milliebest Jun 26th, 2009 06:03 AM

I would like to be below 150E if possible. Our average so far is about 120E.
