The area has lots of small beaches (emphasis on small) and it is a matter of finding one you like. Fortunately the school kids will have gone as well as many of the British drunks (I am British) so a lot quieter than August but still busy. Towns are also very busy and many shops shut from around midday till around 2:30 pm. Weather should still be hot.

By all means hire a car but Spanish roads and motorways (many are tolled) are very busy most of the time and they are not the best or most patient drivers in the world. Do not take a car into Barcelona. There are always tours, even if you park up in another resort and leave from there. If you do want to go, go early and park in a proper garage. The place is a nightmare to drive around and cars often get towed (very expensive) or double parked. Consider popping into Andorra which is not far inland (you go through customs on the way out who will check what you bought in this duty free place) or into France which isn't far north.

We just got back from this parador--I loved it. Will have more to say in my trip report (am very jetlagged), but can tell you the beach at the parador was nice, though, not being "beach people" don't have much to compare it with in the area, but yes, rent a car--you'll need it to get around there.

We just returned from the Aguiablava Parador about 2 weeks ago and found it to be in an absolutely gorgeous location. We stayed in 5 paradors and this was our favorite. Be sure and ask for a room that faces the cove. (Half the rooms face the cove and half the sea).

A book that's packed with information on beaches as well as everything else is "Costa Brava Directions" by Rough Guides.

The beach in Calella de Palafrugell is gorgeous, as is Tamariu. I'd say they're both worth checking out!

Just back from a glorious week in Begur, our favorite beach was Sa Tuna, two wonderful restaurants, lovely view...we also loved Aqua blava and Aqua freda...both exceptional....
