Cortona Hotel Advice

Can anyone recommend a hotel in Cortona? A friend of mine is going in mid to late February. She had a reservation at Il Falconiere but has been reading some unfavorable reviews about it on Trip Advisor and considering the fact that it is pretty expensive, she is now thinking of switching to a different hotel. She is now considering Relais La Corte dei Papi but it is a few miles from town and their restaurant is closed in February. Any suggestions would be most welcome!

what's her budget? How many people per room? Does she want to be located in the city?

It will be her and her fiance. I think budget is around $300 a night and she would like to be in the heart of Cortona if possible.

What about an apartment instead - here's a lovely apartment right in Cortona and they might do a shorter term rental during February

Good suggestion but they are definitely hotel people.

The hotel San Michele... or is it just Michele??? Anyhow, it's right in Cortona and very pleasant. We've stayed there twice. Not as fancy as Falconiere.

We stayed at the San Michele in October for four nights....very enjoyable. Room was spacious and the bath was one of the best we have had in Italy. It was located a few steps from the main square. Breakfasts were quite good.

It should be noted that most of Cortona is very steep although the main street is level. The hotel has parking for an extra cost but we parked for free outside the walls which required walking up a steep hill.

Unfortunately San Michele is closed in February.

Indeed it is...as are many places in Cortona in February. Are your friends wedded to Cortona as a destination or might they consider some place that is more of an all-year destination?

They are pretty set on Cortona.

Tell your friends that they would enjoy Montepulciano more that time of year--look at Locanda San Francesco, a new B&B. But, if stuck on the Cortona mistique then look at a good value at www.lagelosie.com

Le Gelosie is a very nice accommodation....

Here is the correct url.....
