We are planning a trip to Corsica 1st week in October next year. We are going to rent a car and want to take it on a ferry to Sardinia for a couple of days but even though guide books say it will work the ferry companies seem to stop service end of September. Anybody know anything about this? Also we are flying into Marseille, what is the best town to fly to in Corsica to start a trip like this?

Select routes for early September and see what there is, then change the date to late September and October and there is no more service.

From Marseille you can fly to Bastia, Figari and Ajaccio with Air France and/or its associated companies, particularly Air Corsica. Some of the flights are seasonal. For a ride of less than an hour the prices showing now are a couple of hundred dollars one-way. You can see for yourself at www.skyscanner.com

Is it possible that timetables beyond September have not yet been published? There are also ferries from Marseille and other towns along that coast - but guess you know that. We visited Corsica in mid-late September (from Nice) and services were less frequent than in summer.

Most people fly directly from European capitals to the Corsican airports of Ajaccio, Bastia, Calvi or Figari. At a random date in October, a OW flight from Paris, Brussels or Geneva to Ajaccio costs about 70 EUR.

As you will have a car, it doesn't matter to which place you fly.

There are also flights from Nice and Marseille to Corsica. For this local traffic, the ferries from Livorno (Pisa airport), Savona, Nice, Toulon and Marseille are more popular, however.

We were in Corsica in September. We flew into Calvi from Nice and flew back out of Ajaccio. Loved Calvi. Never got to Bastia but from what I've read it's not a highlight and it's quite out of the way from other areas. We did a circular tour with a car (tour was on our own). Calvi region, to Corte, down the east coast to Bonifaccio and then to Ajaccio. 11 days.

We caught a ferry from Santa Teresa Gallura in Sardinia to Bonifacio in Corsica, for a day trip. The views coming in to Bonifacio are spectacular and we really enjoyed our day there. The harbour is lovely for a wander around too. That was in May and hardly any travellers on the ferry, a few foot passengers like us and some cars and motorhomes.
