Correcting Typos...

I read and re-read my posts, most rather lengthy, generally but not always, by using the preview function, than the edit function, correcting the typos that I see, and then posting it. Frequently after I have posted, I see more typos, especially if I am in a hurry to post.

I know it takes up time and space when I post again, giving the corrections and telling the word of my mistakes. As I used to tell my bosses in the old days of typewriters ....'NO ... it is not a spelling error, it's a typo'. I'd prefer to appear to be careless rather than stupid ;-)

If I haven't shut off my computer, I can hit 'back' and the original post with all of the functions will appear on my screen.

???? Once my post appears on the board, can I hit edit, make the corrections, and then hit post - or will it just be a duplicate of my type infested post, with the new corrections?

In a word, no.

Welcome to the 20th Century.

FainaAgain Jun 29th, 2006 02:26 PM

No, but you can type in a word program which auto-checks your spelling or allows you to run a spell-check, then copy into Fodor's.

Lori Jun 29th, 2006 02:28 PM

Most spelling errors on posts here are not so far off the mark that they can't be figured out easily :-) We all make mistakes so don't worry about it.

Nina66 Jun 29th, 2006 02:33 PM

Thanks so much, I feel better already. Don't ask how fast I type or what I did for a living .... that make these typos even more embarassing.

Faina, good suggestion, spellcheck is great but lots of times my typos are real words ie; to instead of too etc.. so spellcheck misses them on my emails.

These typos just prove that my fingers are faster than my brain ... just as my mouth is faster than my brain!

...because this message board use software that is outdated...almost every other message board I participate on gives you the opportunity to edit your posts..

It's about time Fodors joined the 21st century.

<i>almost every other message board I participate on gives you the opportunity to edit your posts..</i>

After you have posted them?

janisj Jun 29th, 2006 04:33 PM

Yep . . .

The post is linked too you/your screen name and you can re-open the post and change it.

Usually it will then say something like &quot;edited by [screen name] mm/dd/yy hr:min&quot;

janisj Jun 29th, 2006 04:34 PM

See - wish I could edit that one :)

&quot;. . . . linked to you/your screen name . . . &quot;

nytraveler Jun 29th, 2006 04:37 PM

No - they can't - nor can I find any spell check.

Do you think my posts would look like they do if there were any other choice (unfortunately my brain works much faster than my fingers).

JAGIRL Jun 29th, 2006 04:39 PM

Now that would be pretty helpful!

The Fodor's editors have the power to amend and delete posts...but we don't.
Now what's that all about? :?

Nina66 Jun 29th, 2006 05:39 PM

I haven't posted on Rick Steves in years, but I know that you could edit after you post appeared. Do they still have it?

Also on Amazon, you can go back and correct your product opinions.

Personally, I don't mind others' typos, just my own .... obsessive/compulsive - moi?

&quot;Personally, I don't mind others' typos, just my own .... obsessive/compulsive - moi?&quot;

Nina, I feel exactly the same way. Other posters' typos just zoom by me, but I cringe over my own.

At EZboard you can edit if the permissions have been set that way by the administrators. You can also insert pictures in your own posts.

FainaAgain Jun 30th, 2006 07:58 AM

Oh, no, please, no pictures! It may be OK on the &quot;other&quot; board, but not here. On Fodor's scrolling takes long enough as is, without pictures inserted, on many interesting threads.

And please please please don't go for EZ format! The worst part there is that typing a reply you can't see all posts, only the last one. By the time I get to the &quot;reply&quot; window there, I forget what was said by other posters :)

And spell check doesn't work on either board.

JAGIRL Jun 30th, 2006 08:04 AM

I like this format just fine...but I would like the editing option. I do cringe at my own typos.

And yes Faina I do agree about the pictures. I'd settle for <b><u><font color="purple">more <font color="blue">emot<font color="orange">ico<font color="green">ns!! ;);;)8}</font></font></font></font></u></b>

I don't know about every other board, but some I know that allow that obviously delay the posting to the public of them. They have to if you can edit them for some time after they are posted. This is not very desirable IMO.

THere is an edit function obviously, if you care to use it. So, sometimes you still don't catch a typo. So what, why are you so worried about this?

I don't even use the edit function because I just don't care frankly, and it takes time. I am a pretty fast typist and actually am fairly accurate, but of course, sometimes I make a typo. Usually it is not a typical typo, but typing a word due to muscle memory (I write a lot in my job) that is similar to the one I meant.

The only time I go back and correct my typos is when I think they can be confusing to the reader. Otherwise, I just don't care and really don't understand why people are spending so much time editing, correcting, writing into Word, etc. geez, it's a public internet forum, you aren't submitting for a Pulitzer.

Faina -- on EZboard if you click on the reply link AT THE TOP it will show all posts.
