Correct pronunciation of Laduree

I will be going to Paris the end of April and have heard so many of you praise the macaroons of Laduree. What is the correct pronunciation? Is it laud-ur-ray? Thanks

La-duree (La with open "a" and duree rhymes with Renee, first name of Renee Zellweger)

Thanks. I wasn't too far off.

try the macarons at Pierre Hermés, the shop is designed like a jewelry box.

Madison Mar 11th, 2005 11:03 AM

Cigalechanta - do you like the macaroons better at Pierre Hermes than at Laduree? I cannot imagine a store designed like a jewelry box. I have to check that out. Sounds so charming.

Thanks

Maybe the final syllables of Laduree and Renee rhyme - - but "du" and "Re" do not.

the more obvious rhyme is "puree" ("pew ray", not "purr-ray" nor "poo-ray").

The first syllable in Renee, is of course "schwa" (ə) - - a symbol that just appeared here for the first time quite recently (I forget who discovered this). You make it by typing ə

I still have not discovered a way to make the IPA symbol for "u" (as in "du", "tu", etc) - - I guess it essentially is the same as y - - but that is sure to be misinterpreted.

Best wishes,

Rex

Cigalechanta - I have googled Pierre Hermes and can't find an address for him. Do you happen to have one?

Madison Mar 11th, 2005 12:10 PM

I did find an address for Pierre Hermes. It is 72 Rue Bonaparte in the 6th.

Hermé worked as head pastry chef at Fachon and Laduree before he went out on his own and considered the best pastry chef's in the world. He has a few beautiful books published.

Do remember that Pierre Hermes only opens at 10:00 and there is no seating. The macaroons are wonderful!

yk Mar 11th, 2005 01:52 PM

Pierre Herme's store is on rue Bonaparte, just north of St Sulpice, across the street from Hotel Bonaparte.

His pastries are also excellent (I was just there 1 week ago). Try the pH3. Also, I think his store is closed on Mondays.

BTW, there are 2 (at least?) Laduree in Paris, one in Madeleine on R Bank, and one in St Germain (on rue Bonaparte also but North of Blvd St Germain) on L Bank.

Cigalechanta - Thank you for all your help. As we speak I am printing out the article on The City of Chocolate.

Marija and YK thank you for your imput as well. By the way YK I have thoroughly enjoyed your report on your recent trip to Paris.

I'm about to commit heresy!

I hate macaroons! Give me a lemon tart anytime!

cigalechanta Mar 11th, 2005 03:59 PM

jody, they do not taste like what we call macaroons here.
