glad to have helped, CDN. it's worth reading up about Hawker before you go - he was a fascinating character. He spent many an hour sitting in a hut he built specially overlooking the coast looking out for wrecks - you can visit it just by walking a little distance along the coast path.

A bit further up the coast is the wonderfully dramatic Hartland Point where the coast does a right-angle turn and the rocks are all higgledy-piggledy - the pub there isn't very good [or never has been when we've been there] but nearby Hartland Abbey has a very nice tea room if it's open.

A postscript to my previous posts re gardens to visit - today we visited Trewithen, which has the distinction of having no less than 18 champion trees of Britain. Beautiful camellias and magnolias with many rhododendrons just coming out. Also wonderful scents from the myrtles dotted around the grounds.

Afterwards we drove down into the Roseland for lunch at the king's Head pub in Ruan Lanihorne - a pretty little pub in the middle of nowhere with a nice view of the church [St Rumon's, whoever he was] and we were able to sit outside in the garden. Nice food and very friendly service. well worth making the detour.

to get home we drove to Philleigh and crossed the Carrick Roads by the King Harry Ferry - a chain ferry that goes across the estuary just below Trelissick Gardens [see above]. £6 single, £8 return.

my pleasure, CDN. I particularly wanted to mention it as it's off the beaten track [we'd never even heard of it, let alone been there], they were very friendly and the food was pretty good. we need more places like that!
