Cornwall

Will be spending a week in Cornwall in June. We will be traveling by car and staying in a centrally located condo. Any suggestions on how to get around daily as we understand that driving is a problem. Any suggestions on what to do, see, where to eat dinners. Any help is most welcome!

Driving is what kind of problem? We drove all around West Cornwall a couple of years ago and had a great time! It's no different than any other part of Britain. It's beautiful. Hire a car!

We were in Cornwall last spring the week of our Memorial Day. Driving on the smaller roads was indeed a problem because it was a national school break, and there was a lot of traffic with many families driving on the (mostly rainy) roads (and all on the wrong side!) However, it didn't prevent us from visiting many quaint seaports on the west coast. Don't miss Polperro and St. Michael's Mount near Penzance. We enjoyed Tintagel on the east side and were sorry we didn't have time to stop in St. Ives. It's a beautiful area, and wherever you go, you will enjoy it.
The roads are very narrow, but we had no problem. Just be very careful going around bends. Some of our favourite towns were, East Looe, Polperro, Fowey, and on the north coast, St. Ives.
We took a boat trip from East Looe to Polperro and it was wonderful. It ave us a beautiful view of the coast. It is great to wander around all of the above towns.
Have fun.
Lee
Last May I was on a walking tour in St Ives, and the English on the tour said Cornwall gets so congested during the summer (which normally means July and August) and on bank holidays that they limit the traffic into Cornwall.
I took a train from London to Cornwall. During my "free" day, I took a bus to Penzance, the nearest major town, and then connected to two destinations (which included St Michael's Mount). The bus and train stations were side by side and next to the TIC, so they were able to tell me exactly how to arrange things. Rather than paying for each leg separately, I choose to buy an Explorer Pass for 6.50 pounds. It can be done with public transportation, but if you are traveling there by car, you may as well continue with the car.

Sue: We spent about five days in Cornwall last July. It was beautiful. We rented a car, and were nervous about the traffic (we'd heard stories, also). However, it really wasn't that bad. Other than steep, winding roads, we had no problems. Do try to pass through Port Isaac. A friend in London told us it would be a nice place to visit, and not too well-known by tourists. She was right. If we ever go back, we'll base ourselves there. Enjoy!
