Corinth to Delphi--Is there a good place to stay? Peloponnese itinerary

Hello all! We are finalizing the Peloponnese part of our trip and wanted 1) advice on whether there is a place to stay between Corinth and Delphi and 2) response to our itinerary. We are travelling with two teens and a nine year old. Does this sound reasonable--

Here's the plan after a couple days in Athens;
Day 1 Drive to Nauflion. Stay there overnight.
Day 2 See Epidaurus, Maybe Poros. Back to Nauflion overnight
Day 3 See Argos Mycenae and Nemea. Drive to Corinth
Day 4 See Corinth. Drive to Delphi for the night or stop between Corinth and Delphi ( if thre is a recommendation out there!)
Day 5 See Delphi. Drive back to Athens late that night.

Thank you for your input!

The drive from Corinth to Delphi may not be as long as you think... if you go west and cross the bridge at Rio (near Patras) you can do it in about 4 hours according to Google maps. Add some time for rest stops and refreshments. The bridge is an engineering marvel.

If you go east via Platea and Thebes it should be under 4 hours. I drove that route (but started in Athens) in 2008 and enjoyed the drive immensely. You can make good time back to Athens using the National Road.

Allow a bit of time for Tiryns on day 3... you will go right past on your way to Mycenae. The kids might enjoy the fact that it's the reputed birthplace of Hercules.

Near Corinth go to Isthmia at the south end of the canal. Check out the sinking bridge there... I've never come across one like it.

Thank you! I was wondering if anyone has stayed in Navpaktos? It's supposed to be charming but doesn't really exist in my guidebook (guess I need a new book).

We were in Greece last May and spent the night in Galaxidi and will vouch for it being a charming seaside town. We stayed at the Ganimede Hotel for 70 euros. We were there looking for my husband's roots - his grandfather was born and raised in that area (unfortunately we didn't find any long lost relatives).

One thing you might consider is pushing on to Delphi and spending the night there instead. The best times to tour the site are before or after the zillions of tour buses arrive or leave. The town is walking distance so its really easy to look at how many buses are up there and walk over after the majority of them are gone. The town itself is kind of tacky but its so convenient and there are lots of hotels so prices are pretty competitive. Its pretty there too - we had a really nice view from our balcony.

Great advice, thanks both of you!

My husband wants to go to Navpaktos--there's a Cervantes statue and battle site he wants to see. Any advice on places to stay there?

If you do end up staying in Delphi, we stayed at the Hotel Varonos for 52 euros. Its right in the middle of town (maybe a 10 minute walk to the site). The decor in the lobby is a little bit odd but the price is good, very clean, good buffet breakfast and managment is really helpful too. And as I mentioned we had a really nice mountain view from our balcony.

mhberg - You have a good plan. One more recommendation: drive from Nauplion to Delphi, stay in Arahova, a more charming town than Delphi. Visit Delphi early in the morning.

I agree with staying in Arachova-it has a wonderful, hopping central square where we relaxed at night with some drinks and food and is much nicer than the tourist trap that is modern Delphi.

Hi,

Sounds like a wonderful trip. I have been to Navpaktos and I really like this town. It has been a few years but my memories are fond ones. There is a lovely harbour and town center. We stayed in a charming hotel that was on the town green and over looked the harbour. I do not remember the name of the hotel, but I think there are more hotels now then when I was there. It is a great place to stay for a night on your way to Delphi. Have a wonderful time.

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences! I especially love hearing about Galaxidi and Arahova---off the beaten path that I would have missed otherwise. Great!
