Corinth?

Has anyone been to the ruins at Corinth? Any comments/reviews? Is it worth it?? We have only one day in Athens (a stop on a cruise). Is there time to see the Acropolis, Plaka and go to Corinth? I don't think we're too interested in the canal, just the ruins. Some of our group has already been to Athens and some (including me) have not. I don't want to miss out on things in Athens to run off to Corinth unless its really worth it! Or if we can get it all in. Any thoughts??

Don't bother going to Corinth. It's interesting, but would take too much time (besides the distance involved, Greek transport isn't always real reliable) and there's plenty to see in Athens for one day.

Michelle:

Corinth was a great stop for us. You do have only a short amount of time but more importantly do what is of interest to you. Look at your guide book and really read what Corinth has to offer. It may be best for you or Athens may be just enough for this time around.

Happy Travels

Oaktown

The trip into the city of Athens from the port of Piraeus will eat up enough of your time that you cannot do Athens, the Plaka and Corinth in the same day unless you are being driven around like a fanatic.

Since you haven't been to Athens then you MUST do the Acropolis and Plaka on this first trip, and make a commitment to yourself to go back to Greece on another occasion and visit other sites, including Corinth.

I am assuming if this is a cruise these are optional land tours?

Corinth on your own would take too long to get there. If it is with a tour group they will almost certainly plunk you down at the canal for a half an hour or so and trust me, this is SO boring and of such marginal interest you will be chomping at the bit to leave long before they put you on the bus and move you on.

Corinth is interesting if you have never before visited a Greek archaeological site, but not compelling in the same way other sites such as Olympia or Delphi are. Olympia and Delphi both quite take your breath away and there is just not enough time in either place to soak in the ambiance and the profound sense of history you will get when you are there and you shut your eyes and let your mind ramble back three or four millenia.

At Corinth you can shoot 8 or 10 photos of the columns and photograph the wall where St. Paul is reputed to have preached his gospel to the Corinthians before you run out of inspiring shots. That leaves you time to trip around the little museum with its not particularly remarkable artifacts for a while, and then that, basically is it.

The Acropolis and Plaka will give you a real good day's sense of history at the same time as it gives you a good sense of modern Athens, and in that sense it would get my vote if you can only do one thing that one day.

My only quibble about Athens is the air pollution. Hopefully the day you are there it will be low; on days when it is high it is hell on ashmatics or people with allergies, though I must say at Acropolis level the air does seem cleaner.

Lanny
THANKS EVERYONE!! I just bought an Athens area guidebook so hopefully our group can make a more educated decision. Thanks again for your help....its wonderful to have other travellers' opinions!

I agree that it would be impossible to get to Corinth and back in one day and actually have the time to see and enjoy the site. I would add that the coolest thing at Corinth, in my view, is the climb up the Acrocorinth, and that takes a couple of hours to do at least! So save it for a visit when you can take more time to explore.

Does anyone know of a nice restaurant with a view of the Acropolis at night?
Hopefully with good food also!
