Corfu greece question
Hi, Corfu is one of the islands we would like to visit june 2008. We are in out mid 40s and love the beach, food, wine and quiet relaxation. We do not like clubs, motorized water activities and that type of beach environment. Will Corfu and its water be comfortably warm in mid june (we are use to the caribbean, which can sometimes be too hot)? Can you recommend an area for us to base ourselves in? We will stay for 5 days. Also, does anyone have knowledge of ferries. We will either be coming from Milos or Naxos and will fly if we have to but was wondering if the ferry might be an option. Thanks for any info you can provide.

You need to look at a map. Corfu is nowhere near Milos or Naxos.
From Milos or Naxos, take a ferry to Pireas then a train via Corinthos to Patra, then an overnight ferry to Corfu, or go to Pireas then a bus from Athens to Corfu (it's either an all-day journey or an overnight journey, in both cases via the Igoumenitsa-Corfu ferry).

Corfu is fun and Corfu town is a gem. It quite a touristy island though and you should choose carefully to avoid towns which cater to that young, drinking party scene. The propensity toward large hotels and charmless food wont suit everyone. Still, there is lots to see and do. There is some very decent scuba diving and snorkeling around.

The bus can be a bit frustrating. So if you are going by public transportation keep that in mind. I stayed in Paleokastrika which is pretty and very quiet at night, but the bus was impossible in the evening so I moved into Corfu Town itself and day triped to the beach instead.

The water in June is still cool in Greece. Still, the weather was warm and I'm accustomed to colder waters, so I found swimming no problem.

As the poster above pointed out - you'll need to fly into Athens then on to Corfu if your coming from the Cyclades islands.

Have fun,

Have a look at the agni taverna web site for ideas on where to go on Corfu. It is a beautiful island, I spend 2 or 3 months there every year. The sea will be warm enough for swimming in June but not too warm.
The north of the island is pretty quiet and there are also some lovely places on the west coast. The agni taverna site should answer any questions you have about possible places to base yourself.
Regarding getting there, you pretty much need to get back to Athens and fly to Corfu from there. Another option, is to take the bus from Athens to Igoumenitsa and the ferry from there to Corfu. As you only have a few days to spare, I reccommend that you fly. I would suggest Aegean Airways as they are usually reasonably priced and reliable. They fly twice a day from Athens to Corfu.

Nothing wrong with combining Corfu and the Cyclades if that's what you really want, but it is a bit of a pain getting from one to the other. I agree that flying from Athens to Corfu is the way to go.

You could also fly from Naxos or Milos back to Athens. Unfortunately neither island is served by Aegean Airlines, so you would have to fly that leg with Olympic, which is facing reorganization at the moment.

Your other option is ferry from the Cyclades to Piraeus and bus or taxi from Piraeus to Athens Airport for your flight to Corfu. Ferries to Piraeus from Milos and Naxos take 5-6 hours (a little less for the highspeeds). Piraeus to Athens Airport takes about an hour.

Some of the hotels within a short distance of Corfu town have private beaches, and you could still have quiet enjoyment. Do at least take a daytrip by car to Paleokastritsa on the other side of the island; after many years I still recall its beauty.
