Copenhagen Restaurants: Cofoco, Salt, and Els
 

These are the three restaurants I ate at one a recent trip through Copenhagen:

Cofoco in Copenhagen and Balthazar's Kitchen in Amsterdam were the two jewels of my trip. Cofoco is a trendy restaurant with emphasis on fresh good food. At only 225 kroner, the place is practically cheap, but had the best food I ate on the trip. Apparently the philosophy is to make great food and have the restaurant full each night. When I called for reservations the day before, there was only room at the 'long table'...a long table for 30 people where I dined across from my friend. It was great because we were able to talk with people next to us--hear about Copenhagen, Denmark in general, etc. They have many smaller tables as well, but I get teh impression one must reserve in advance. They also run a similar restaurant in the area called Les trois cochons which I tried to eat on my last night but it was closed (Sunday). They had the best risotto I've ever eaten!

Definitely pricier than Cofoco, Salt was very good as well. The service was impeccable and the waitstaff were very 'by the book' with plates, silverwear and table settings. They have a menu option that my friend and I both chose three of four courses. I had two starters and a main dish, and my friend had a starter, a main dish and dessert. They waiter was reluctant to serve us three courses in concert, but rather we each had a starter, then he had to wait while I was served my second starter, then we each had a main course, then he had dessert. A similar situtation occured with the French couple, but they were quite upset but were unable to communicate it to the waiter. The restaurant is fairly large and felt a little empty on a Thursday night in May. There were a lot of 'foodie types' eating there that night. A table ordering several different types of wines and a French couple with a Michelin guide.

On a Sunday May night, this was one of the only restaurants we could find open. At the base of the Nyann, it's location is perfect. The dining room is elegant. We ate early on a Sunday and were one of the only people in the place. The food is good, but I think overpriced. The waitstaff was pleasant and attentive.

Can anyone recommend a good place to eat dinner on a SUNDAY in Copenhagen? It seems virtually every restaurant in the city shuts down on Sunday night.

Also FYI-
It seems most Danish restaurants will charge a service fee if you pay using a nonDanish credit card. Bring cash--with the already high taxes, Denmark can be expensive.

mcnyc--You can't go wrong with Cofoco...make a reservation though! Try Les trois cochons too and let me know what you think.

Gosh, I'm trying to think where we ate on a Sunday. We stayed in Nyhavn and didn't seem to have a problem finding an open restaurant any time. We ate at one called either Herford or The Herford. It was reasonable..based on Copenhagen prices..I think about 40.00 for me. They had a special with appitizer, main course and desert. I had a half lobster, a pepper steak, and apple tart ...really good. Can't remember what night though. The hotel 71 Nyhavn also has a very nice restaurant..fairly expensive. We ate dinner there one night..we were staying there..it was good...I would not say fabulous..depended on what you ordered I guess. You could have from two to four courses so the price was according to how many courses you had. It's pretty "gourmet", had some of those beautiful little things arranged on a big plate...makes me think of a rabbit doodle on a cabbage leaf..but food was pretty good.

I think I once ate at Restaurant Zeleste on a Sunday night. I like the place a lot. While the portions are not large, the quality was impeccable. It is located opposite Restaurant Els, I believe, close to Nyhavn on Store Strandstaede. I would certainly recommend it, its atmosphere is so nice, especially their heated courtyard patio was quite appealing.

BTW, I think the restaurant crefloors mentions is called A Hereford Beefstouw - a small chain of high quality steak houses.
