Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm
 

I have a short trip planned with just one to two days in each city.

If I have an extra day, which of the cities (Copenhagen, Oslo or Stockholm) should I spent it in?

Never been to Oslo, but I'd pick Stockholm over Copenhagen for an extra day, all else being equal. We loved the water,architecture and ambience in Stockholm.

Confused: Do you have 2 days to spend in one of those 3 cities, or 1-2 days each to spend in 2 out of the three cities? And where are you starting from?

Very fond of both Copenhagen and Stockholm (not been to Oslo), but if you only have 24 hrs., I might choose Copenhagen for its compactness (touristically speaking) and charm around Tivoli and the harbor. Stockholm takes a little more legwork other than in the old section, seems to have a larger scale, although it's certainly got world-class sights.

Hopefully I won't offend anybody but having been to all three, my favorite hands down is Stockholm. I wouldn't bother with Oslo. If I were you, I would divide my time between Copenhagen and Stockholm, with more time in Stockholm than in Copenhagen.

Stockholm is my favorate european city, and I am sure you're going to love it. It's just amazing, the architecture, the waterfront, the bridges, the people. I've been there three times and I keep going back.
Never been to Oslo or Copenhagen though.

Cruiseluv, how are these three cities different, and why didn't you like Oslo ?
I think my next scandanavian trip is going to be to Copenhagen, if I could just get so close to Stockholm and not pay a visit !!

Maybe I was too harsh on my opinion about Oslo. there was nothing per se wrong with it. But after spending 4 days in Stockholm we took the Linx train to Oslo( 5 hrs) and , in comparison to Stockholm , was a little bit of a letdown. We also liked Copenhagen very much. More compact than Stockholm, but would really like to go back sometime. And would LOVE to go back to Stockholm.

I've been to all three, and like them for different reasons. If you are only going to spend one day in one city and two in the others, I'd tack on the extra day to the city in which you're only spending one day. If it's in the summer you're going, I'd say Oslo or Stockholm. If it's in winter, I'd pick Copenhagen.

Actually, it depends on what you like to do, so I'm changing my vote again. If you like museums, I'd pick Oslo. If you like European amusement parks (and wooden roller coasters), I'd pick Copenhagen (in summer). If you like hanging out, I'd pick Stockholm.

If you can, try to visit either the Frederiksborg Slot in Hillerod

Hillerod is a 1 hr trip by train.
Roskilde is about 20 min.

I've posted this query before, and not gotten very much feedback, so here I go again. For all you folks who know these cities well, can you recommend a great hotel in Copenhagen and Stockholm? Main priority for us is quiet and comfort; also need a king bed. Some folks rave about the Bern(s)? in Stockholm, but then I learned that there's a disco next door. Am willing to pay high end prices for a terrific accommodation (Grand Hotel is said to have "gone downhill"?) Thanks!

I will have a bit of a different opinion than the rest. We did the same trip a few years back. Starting in Oslo, then to Stockholm & then took the overnight train to Copenhagen. Spent 3 full days & nights in each. Very much enjoyed all 3, but after the trip was over, the 1 I wished I really had more time & the area I want to back to the most is Oslo. Maybe it was the time of year that I was there, beginning of June, maybe it was the sites, maybe it was the music festival going on all over the place, maybe it was just the people that I came in contact with, but the whole atmoshpere makes me want to go back to Oslo & other areas of Norway.

Bill, you're not alone -- I had all the same "maybe"s and felt the same. We loved Oslo.

Poss -- I saw the Grand Hotel in Stockholm (we were staying around the corner at the Radisson) and it did NOT look like it was going downhill at all. It was quite beautiful. More importantly (to me anyway) were the staff at the Grand. One evening we were strolling back to our hotel from Gamla Stan and my contact lens fell out right outside the Grand. The doorman came out, then other staff from the hotel, they brought out flashlights, and soon, everyone was down on their hands and knees looking for my contact. VERY classy staff, just wonderful, and this was for someone not even staying at their hotel.

We've never stayed at the Grand Hotel Stockholm, but we had dinner several times in there. They have this really good dinner buffet that we love. Their authentic scandanavian salmon is not to be missed !
This hotel probably has the best location in Stockholm, located on the water front right next to the old city.

We were in Sweden for about a month the last time, so obviousely we could not stay in this ritzy hotel for all of that time. But I would defenitely stay in there if I were in Stckholm for a couple of days.

As an Old Swede I vote for Stockholm-:) Takes much more than one day to see all the sights, explore the history etc. But..if you're a youngster the vibe in Copenhagen might be more to your liking.
